How do you clean a wool rug?
Short answer
Vacuum it often, blot spills right away with lukewarm water, and use only pH neutral, wool safe cleaners. Skip bleach, store bought oxygen sprays, and anything alkaline, and never soak it, because wool can bleed and brown when it stays wet. For a deep clean, Shaw recommends a professional.

Everyday care
Vacuum at least once a week. For wool, Shaw recommends a vacuum without a beater bar, or one with the brush raised, so the pile doesn't fuzz. Rotate the rug every 3 to 6 months, keep it out of direct sun, and use a rug pad so it wears evenly.

Spills and spots
Blot right away with a clean white cloth, working from the edges in. Don't rub. Use lukewarm water, a little at a time, and blot until nothing transfers. WoolSafe adds two good rules: put the spot cleaner on your cloth instead of straight on the rug, and rinse water based spotters out with clean water.
Sources disagree on dish soap. Shaw allows a tiny bit of dish soap in lukewarm water for minor spills on its wool rugs, while WoolSafe says to skip dish liquid and use WoolSafe approved products. When in doubt, go with your rug maker's care label.

Deep cleaning a wool rug
A wool rug needs a gentle, low moisture approach and fast drying. Shaw lists encapsulation with approved cleaners as an interim method for its wool products and doesn't recommend bonnet cleaning.
OxyMagic starts every area rug with a look at the fiber, backing, dyes, care label, and condition. Some wool, handmade, silk, antique, or damaged rugs are better off with a rug specialist or need written guidance from the maker, and we'll tell you straight. Area rug cleaning starts at $3 per square foot. See area rug cleaning.

How to spot clean a wool rug
Blot the spill with a clean white cloth, and scrape up any solids. Don't rub.
Test any cleaner on a hidden corner and wait for it to dry.
Put a small amount of wool safe spotter on the cloth, not on the rug, and work from the edges in.
Rinse by blotting with a cloth dampened in lukewarm water.
Blot dry, then run a fan so the spot dries fast.
If color bleeds or the spot stays, stop and call a professional.

Can you steam clean a wool rug?
Shaw warns that hot water extraction and shampooing can permanently damage its wool rugs and recommends professional cleaning only. CRI says wool dislikes heat and alkaline cleaners. Check your rug maker's care label before any wet cleaning.
Can I use OxiClean or hydrogen peroxide on a wool rug?
OxiClean's carpet spray label says not to use it on wool. The IICRC doesn't recommend 3% hydrogen peroxide on wool without extensive testing for color loss.
Why is my new wool rug shedding?
Some shedding is normal as loose fibers work out of a new wool rug, per Shaw. Vacuum without a beater bar and trim any tufts that stick up even with the pile instead of pulling them.
