Why is my carpet turning brown after cleaning?
Short answer
Usually because the carpet got too wet and dried slowly. As it dries, leftover soil in the backing wicks up to the fiber tips, or plant fibers like jute and cotton release brown color, which the IICRC calls cellulosic browning. Cleaner residue can show up the same way. Low moisture and fast drying help most.

The three usual causes
- Wicking. A spill or deep soil sits in the backing or pad. As the carpet dries from the bottom up, it carries that soil to the tips, so an old spot comes back or a traffic lane looks dingy again.
- Cellulosic browning. Plant fibers like jute or cotton stay wet too long and release a brown tint. The IICRC says this is easily corrected with the right cleaning method, and warns not to try fixing it yourself.
- Residue. Soap or store bought spotters left in the carpet attract dirt and turn dark. DIY oxygen bleach spotters that aren't rinsed out can leave a yellowish brown mark.

What to do about it
Give it time first. The IICRC suggests letting the carpet dry for at least 48 hours, then vacuuming slowly from several directions. Wicked soil often lifts with light misting and blotting (steps below).
If it's browning or the spots stay, call the company that cleaned it and ask them to come back. Brown from bleach or old pet urine is different: the IICRC says bleach damage can only be fixed by dyeing or patching, and aged urine can permanently change dye.

Why low moisture helps
Browning and wicking both start with water that reaches the backing and dries slowly. The IICRC recommends fans and extra ventilation after cleaning to speed drying, and a trade article in CMM notes that recleaning with an absorption, low moisture method greatly improves results on wicking spots.
OxyMagic cleans with a low moisture process, and most carpets are dry in an hour or two, depending on the carpet and the weather. No method can promise a spot will never wick. A spill that soaked the pad can still come back, and we'll tell you when that's likely. See fast drying carpet cleaning.

If brown spots show up after a cleaning
Let the carpet dry fully, at least 48 hours, with fans running.
Vacuum the spots slowly from three or more directions.
Mist a little distilled water on the spot and blot with a white towel. Look for brown on the towel.
Lay 6 to 10 layers of white paper towel on the spot, cover with a plastic bag, weigh it down with books, and leave it for 6 to 8 hours.
Still brown? Call the company back. The IICRC says not to treat browning yourself.
Related questions
Is carpet browning permanent?
Usually not. The IICRC says cellulosic browning is easily corrected with the proper cleaning method, and wicked soil often lifts with blotting. Brown from bleach or old urine damage is different and may be permanent.
Why did brown spots show up after a steam cleaning?
Most often the carpet stayed wet too long, so soil or plant fiber color wicked up as it dried. CRI says wet cleaned carpet should be dry within 12 hours. Ask the cleaner to come back and treat it.
What is carpet wicking?
Wicking is when a spot comes back after cleaning because soil or a spill in the backing rises to the fiber tips as the carpet dries, per the IICRC. It shows up most in traffic lanes and old spill spots.
