Why fiber changes the price
Synthetic rugs are the easiest to clean. Wool takes more care: the Carpet and Rug Institute says wool is easily damaged by bleaches and alkalies, needs neutral cleaners, and should dry quickly to limit yellowing or browning. CRI says silk and plant fibers like jute and sisal are best left to professionals.
More care means more time, and that's most of the price gap between a polyester rug and a wool or silk one.

In your home or at a rug plant
Some rugs clean well right where they lie. Others do better off site, where they can be washed and dried flat. HomeGuide notes that in home cleaning is more convenient, while off site cleaning is usually more thorough. Handmade, antique, and fragile rugs are the ones most likely to need a rug specialist.
