Can you clean carpet with Dawn dish soap?
Short answer
For small spots, yes, in tiny amounts. The Carpet and Rug Institute's mix is 1/4 teaspoon of liquid dish soap per cup of lukewarm water, and never stronger. Rinse it out well, because leftover soap attracts dirt. Don't use it for whole carpet cleaning or in a machine, and check before using it on wool.

Why a little goes a long way
Soap left in carpet stays sticky and grabs dirt, so the spot looks darker a few weeks later. That's why CRI's recipe is so weak and why rinsing matters as much as the soap.
The IICRC has a simple residue test for any spot cleaner: let about half an ounce of your mix dry in a small glass. If it leaves a sticky film, it will leave one in your carpet too.

Dawn or any dish soap?
Dawn is a liquid dish soap, so the same rules apply to it and to other brands: plain liquid dish soap, a tiny amount, rinsed out. Never swap in dishwasher detergent or laundry detergent, per CRI.

Where dish soap doesn't belong
- Carpet machines. CRI says to use cleaners sold for carpet cleaning with any cleaning method. Check your machine's manual first.
- Wool. WoolSafe says to skip dish liquid on wool, though Shaw allows a tiny amount for minor spills on its wool rugs. Follow your rug maker's label.
- Whole rooms. Spot cleaning only. Wide areas are hard to rinse and easy to overwet.
- Pet urine odor. Soap can lift the stain, but Humane World for Animals recommends a pet odor neutralizer for the smell.

Can I put Dawn in my carpet cleaning machine?
CRI says to use cleaners sold for carpet cleaning with any method, not household detergents. Check your machine's manual first.
Does dish soap leave residue in carpet?
It can if you use too much or don't rinse. CRI warns detergent residue causes rapid soiling. The IICRC suggests letting a little of your mix dry in a glass. If it's sticky, it'll leave a sticky film in carpet too.
Is dish soap or vinegar better for carpet stains?
They do different jobs. CRI starts most spots with the mild dish soap mix and uses a vinegar mix mainly to cut alkalinity after detergent. With pet urine, Humane World for Animals says to skip vinegar.
