Can carpet cleaning damage your carpet?

Updated By OxyMagic Twin Cities 5 sources

Short answer

Done right, no. The Carpet and Rug Institute says carpet should be cleaned the way the manufacturer specifies, about every 12 to 18 months, and the IICRC says proper cleaning rarely causes delamination. Done wrong, it can. Overwetting can shrink carpet or loosen the backing, and leftover soap makes carpet get dirty faster.

What can go wrong

  • Overwetting. Shrinkage, seam or backing separation, browning, and odor (CRI, IICRC).
  • Leftover soap or spotter. Sticky residue that pulls in dirt and makes carpet look worse within weeks.
  • The wrong product for the fiber. Wool and silk need gentle, neutral cleaners, and store bought oxygen bleach spotters left unrinsed can yellow synthetic carpet.
  • Solvent poured straight on. CRI warns solvent that reaches the backing can damage the latex holding the layers together.
  • Too much scrubbing. Shaw notes thick loop pile can fuzz and distort with brushing, rubbing, or a beater bar.

Things that get blamed on cleaning

Some problems show up after a cleaning without being caused by it. The IICRC lists corn rowing, where rows of pile lean over, as a trait of certain carpet constructions. Old pet urine damage and worn traffic lanes also look more obvious once the soil hiding them is gone.

Loose installation is another. The IICRC says carpet that ripples after cleaning usually lies flat again once dry, and carpet that keeps rippling needs to be stretched again by an installer.

How to hire a cleaner who won't damage it

Ask what method and product they use, how they control moisture, and how long drying takes. Ask whether they test a hidden spot first and how they keep soap and spotter residue out of your carpet. If your carpet warranty names a method, like Shaw's hot water extraction, read it before you book any cleaning.

We clean with a low moisture process and a hydrogen peroxide based cleaner that dries crisp and vacuums up, so less soap stays behind to grab new dirt. OxyMagic holds Green Seal and EPA Safer Choice certifications. You can check the Green Seal record and the EPA Safer Choice record yourself. Most carpets are dry in an hour or two, depending on the carpet and the weather. Carpet cleaning starts at $129 for two carpeted rooms, and you'll get the price in writing.

Related questions

Does carpet cleaning ruin carpet?

Not when it's done right. CRI recommends cleaning on the manufacturer's schedule. Problems come from overwetting, leftover soap, or the wrong products for the fiber.

Why does my carpet look worse after cleaning?

Usually wicking, residue, or wear that dirt was hiding. The IICRC notes urine damage and worn areas look more obvious once the soil covering them is gone. Ask the cleaner to come back and check.

How often should carpet be professionally cleaned?

Carpet makers set the schedule. Shaw suggests every 6 to 18 months depending on traffic, and CRI says about every 12 to 18 months. Busier homes land at the shorter end.
