What are the different carpet cleaning methods?
Short answer
The main methods are hot water extraction (often called steam cleaning), encapsulation, bonnet cleaning, dry compound, dry foam, and shampooing. Extraction flushes carpet with hot water and pulls it back out. Low moisture methods use only a little liquid, so carpet dries fast. Some, like bonnet cleaning, are mostly for quick upkeep between deep cleans. Start with your carpet maker's care guide.

The methods, in plain words
- Hot water extraction (steam cleaning). Hot water and detergent go in under pressure and come back out into a tank. It flushes soil out, and it's the method named in care guides like Shaw's. It also puts the most liquid into the carpet, so weak extraction or poor airflow leaves it damp. CRI says it should dry within 12 hours.
- Encapsulation. A detergent wraps around soil and dries into crystals that vacuum away, so less soap stays behind to grab new dirt. It dries fast and works well for routine upkeep. It needs a thorough vacuuming afterward, and heavy soil may need more.
- Bonnet (absorbent pad). A spinning pad soaks up soil from the top of the carpet with very little moisture. It's quick for upkeep between deep cleans, but it only works the surface, and Shaw doesn't recommend it for its wool carpet.
- Dry compound. An absorbent powder with solvents is brushed in and vacuumed up, so the carpet stays nearly dry. The IICRC says leftover compound can cause browning, so the vacuuming has to be thorough.
- Dry foam. Foam is worked into the pile and pulled back up with a wet vacuum. It's low moisture, but foam left behind leaves detergent, and CRI warns detergent residue makes carpet soil faster.
- Shampooing. A rotary brush works foaming detergent into the pile. CRI says to rinse out all detergent, because residue makes carpet soil faster.

Which method fits your carpet
Start with the carpet maker's care guide. Shaw's, for example, names hot water extraction for professional cleaning. Wool and natural fibers need gentle, low moisture handling and fast drying, per Shaw and CRI. Pet urine in the pad needs treatment below the surface no matter which method is used.
Then think about your house. If you need rooms back quickly, or the carpet has a history of browning or wicking, a low moisture method that dries fast has real advantages.

Related questions
Is steam cleaning the same as hot water extraction?
In carpet cleaning, yes. Steam cleaning is the everyday name for hot water extraction, and Shaw's care guide calls it "hot water extraction (steam cleaning)."
Is dry carpet cleaning really dry?
Not completely. Dry methods like dry compound and encapsulation use very little moisture, so carpet dries fast, but they still use some liquid or solvent, per CMM.
Which carpet cleaning method is right for me?
Start with the one your carpet maker names. Shaw names hot water extraction. Low moisture methods dry faster, which helps busy homes. Ask about method, product, and drying time before you book.
