Does OxiClean carpet cleaner work?
Short answer
Yes, for fresh spots on synthetic carpet. OxiClean's carpet sprays are hydrogen peroxide spot cleaners. The label says to test a hidden spot first and not to use them on wool, leather or silk. They're made for spots, not whole rooms, and we couldn't find an independent lab test of how well they work.

What's actually in OxiClean carpet products
The carpet sprays (Carpet & Area Rug Stain Remover and the Pet Stain & Odor version) are built on hydrogen peroxide. That's the same oxidizer that lifts color out of lots of organic stains, like coffee, wine and pet accidents. They also have surfactants that loosen dirt, a chelating agent and fragrance.
The Versatile Stain Remover powder in the tub is a laundry product. It mixes sodium carbonate (washing soda) with sodium percarbonate, which turns into hydrogen peroxide once it dissolves in water. It's much more alkaline, with a pH up to 11 once diluted, and OxiClean says to use it on carpet only if it's a water washable rug.

Where it works and where it doesn't
OxiClean sprays are fine for a small, fresh spot on nylon or polyester carpet that passes a hidden colorfastness test. They aren't made for whole rooms, traffic lanes or smells that have soaked into the pad.
Skip them on wool, silk and natural fiber rugs, like the label says. And be careful with the directions that say to saturate the carpet and pad. A soaked pad can dry slowly, and slow drying is how smells and mildew start.

How OxyMagic uses the same chemistry, professionally
OxyMagic cleans with a hydrogen peroxide based product too, but we use a low-moisture process instead of soaking the carpet. OxyMagic holds Green Seal and EPA Safer Choice certifications (see the Green Seal record and the EPA Safer Choice record). Most carpets are dry in an hour or two, depending on the carpet and the weather. If a spot keeps coming back after you spray it, the source is usually below the surface, and that's a job for a professional clean.

How to use an OxiClean carpet spray safely
Check the carpet label or ask your installer. Skip it if the carpet is wool, silk or another natural fiber.
Test a hidden spot, like inside a closet, and let it dry before you judge the color.
Blot up as much of the spill as you can with a white towel before you spray.
Use only as much as the stain needs, wait the 10 minutes the label says, then blot. Don't scrub.
Rinse with a little clean water, blot it dry, and don't vacuum until it's completely dry.
Related questions
Is OxiClean safe on all carpet?
No. OxiClean's carpet products say not to use them on wool, leather or silk, and to test a hidden spot for colorfastness first.
Can I use OxiClean in my carpet cleaning machine?
Only the one made for machines, OxiClean Large Area Carpet Cleaner, mixed at your machine maker's ratio. For the Versatile powder, OxiClean says to check with your machine's maker first.
Why did the stain come back after I used OxiClean?
Stains often wick back up from the backing or pad as the carpet dries. The top looks clean, then what's underneath rises again. A low-moisture clean puts less water into the carpet, so there's less to carry it back up. We look at the spot first and tell you what to expect.
