Can you sprinkle OxiClean on carpet and vacuum it up?
Short answer
No. OxiClean powder needs water to work, and OxiClean's own carpet directions say to dissolve it, dab on just enough to cover the stain, blot, and rinse with clean water. Sprinkling it dry skips all of that. If you want a dry powder to vacuum up, use plain baking soda instead.

Why dry powder is the wrong way
Sprinkling skips every step the maker says the product needs. The dry powder just sits on the fibers, not dissolved and not rinsed. The first time that spot gets damp from a spill, humid air or a mop, it turns into a strong alkaline mix that nobody rinses away. Even OxiClean's promise that its blue crystals won't stain only applies "when properly dissolved."
It also ends up in your vacuum. Fine powders are hard on bags and filters, and this one irritates eyes, so you don't want it blowing out the exhaust.

What to use instead
For odors, sprinkle plain baking soda on dry carpet, wait, and vacuum. For a stain, use the dissolved OxiClean method below or a carpet spot cleaner. If a smell or stain keeps coming back, the problem's usually in the backing or pad, so have a pro check how deep it goes.
Part 3 of 3
The right way to use OxiClean powder on a carpet stain
Make sure the rug or carpet is water washable and isn't wool or silk. Test a hidden spot first.
Dissolve the powder in warm water at the label ratio (OxiClean says a scoop filled to line 1 for every 16 ounces of water).
Put on just enough to cover the stain. Don't soak the carpet.
Let it sit 1 to 5 minutes, then blot with a white towel. Don't let it dry on the fibers.
Rinse with clean water, blot until it's dry, and never store the mix in a sealed container.
Related questions
Will dry OxiClean bleach my carpet?
It can once it gets wet, because it turns into a strong alkaline oxygen bleach and nobody rinses it off. OxiClean's own directions say to dissolve, blot and rinse, and to test for colorfastness first.
Is OxiClean powder safe for my vacuum?
OxiClean doesn't say it is. Fine powders clog bags and filters, and the dust irritates eyes, so it's better not to vacuum it up dry.
What can I sprinkle on carpet to deodorize it?
Plain baking soda. Arm & Hammer says to leave it at least 15 minutes, longer for strong odors, then vacuum.
