Why carpet is hard to save once mold grows
Carpet is porous, and mold often grows where you can't see it, on the backing, in the pad and on the subfloor. The EPA lists "the underside of carpets and pads" as a common hiding place. A surface cleaning can make carpet look and smell better, but it doesn't reach mold growing through the backing and pad.

What to do after a leak or flood
Speed matters most. Get the standing water out, run a dehumidifier and fans, and dry the carpet, pad and subfloor within 24 to 48 hours. If the water came from sewage or a flood, don't handle it yourself. That takes protective gear and professionals. The CDC says to throw away carpet, padding and rugs you can't clean or dry quickly after a flood.

If you find mold on or under carpet
Find and fix where the moisture comes from, like a leak, a wet basement or high humidity.
If the area is bigger than about 10 square feet or the water was contaminated, call a mold remediation professional.
For small areas, wear an N95 respirator, gloves and goggles, like the CDC advises.
Dry everything, including the pad and subfloor, and keep indoor humidity below 60%, ideally 30% to 50%.
Replace carpet and pad that stay moldy or smell musty after drying.
