How do you get dog pee out of carpet?

Updated By OxyMagic Twin Cities 3 sources

Short answer

Blot up as much as you can right away, pressing with paper towels until the spot is barely damp. Rinse with cool water and blot again, then use a pet odor neutralizer. Skip steam, ammonia, and vinegar, which can set the stain or draw your dog back. If it soaked the pad, call a pro.

Smell keeps coming back? Pet treatment typically runs $25 to $75 per room. Call or text OxyMagic Carpet Cleaning in Blaine, MN at 763-213-6217. We answer 8AM to 8PM, 7 days, and you can text anytime.

Why dog pee is tricky

Urine soaks down through the fibers into the backing and pad. The top can look clean while the smell waits underneath, then comes back on humid days. The IICRC notes that urine can also change the dye, sometimes right away and sometimes over months, and aged urine can weaken the fibers.

After a cleaning, a black light can still make a spot glow. The IICRC says that glow can come from residue bonded to the fiber, even when the urine itself is gone.

Fresh accident or old spot?

Fresh is easier: blot hard, rinse with cool water, blot again, then use a pet odor neutralizer once the spot is clean. For old spots, find them first. Humane World for Animals suggests using your nose or a black light and outlining the spots with chalk.

If the smell comes back after the spot dries, or your dog keeps returning to it, the urine likely reached the pad. Regular accidents are also worth a vet visit to rule out a medical cause.

What not to use

  • Steam or heat. Humane World for Animals says heat can permanently set urine stains and odor.
  • Ammonia or vinegar. CRI lists both as later spot steps for urine, but with pets, Humane World for Animals says strong smells can draw them back to mark.
  • Laundry detergent or dishwasher detergent. CRI warns laundry detergents can contain brighteners that dye fibers, and dishwasher detergents can contain bleach.
  • Store bought oxygen bleach spotters left in the carpet. The IICRC says they can turn synthetic carpet yellowish brown if not rinsed out.

When it's time to call OxyMagic

If the smell keeps coming back, the urine is below the surface. Our pet stain and odor treatment goes after deeper spots, and it can reduce or remove odor depending on the source, depth, and condition we find. Sometimes the pad has to be replaced, and we'll tell you if that's what we see. Pet treatment typically runs $25 to $75 per room, or $150 to $300 for a whole home.

Fresh dog pee on carpet

  1. Blot with a thick stack of paper towels, cover with newspaper, and stand on it for a minute. Repeat until the spot is barely damp.

  2. Rinse the spot with clean, cool water and blot dry.

  3. If a stain is left, mix 1/4 teaspoon of liquid dish soap in a cup of lukewarm water, test a hidden spot, apply with a white cloth, and blot.

  4. Rinse again with plain water and blot until no soap is left.

  5. Once the spot is clean, apply a pet odor neutralizer as the label directs.

  6. Keep your dog off the spot until it's dry and the smell is gone.

Related questions

Why does my carpet smell like dog pee after cleaning?

Heat and moisture from cleaning can bring back odor still sitting in the backing or pad. The IICRC notes cleaning can make odors more noticeable, especially in humid weather. If it lingers after drying, the urine likely reached the pad.

Does vinegar get dog pee out of carpet?

CRI lists a diluted white vinegar step for urine spots, but Humane World for Animals advises skipping vinegar and ammonia with pets, because strong smells can draw them back to mark. It recommends a pet odor neutralizer once the spot is clean.

Can professional cleaning remove old dog urine?

It can often reduce or remove the odor, depending on how deep the urine went and how long it sat. The IICRC notes aged urine can permanently change dye and weaken fibers, and a soaked pad may need replacing.
